Earlier this year, singer Jennifer Hudson scored an engagement ring in the theatrical version of Sex and the City. Now the Academy Award winner is having the chance to celebrate for real.

This weekend, a rep for Hudson confirmed the American Idol star is now engaged. Boyfriend David Otunga proposed Friday night during a bash for Jennifer’s 27th birthday.

Although many had thought Jennifer would eventually wed her longtime beau from Chicago (the man she acknowledged in her acceptance speech), the two broke up in late 2007 after 8 years together. This engagement to Otunga (also from Chicago) comes after less than a year of dating.

While David Otunga is not a name recognizable in most households, the groom-to-be might best be known for his alter ego. Last year, the 28-year-old Harvard School grad was one of the contestants (“Punk”) vying for Tiffany Pollard‘s affections on I Love New York 2.

We can most likely expect to hear more about Jennifer’s nuptials in the next few weeks. Hudson will be out promoting her upcoming album (due out September 30) and new film, The Secret Life of Bees, shortly.
