Are magazine and newspaper apps doomed?

Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Editorials,

Fred Wilson, a known venture capitalist, put up a post this week arguing that magazine and newspaper apps are not a viable strategy for content publishers. It's no secret that the print industry has been in decline, with print companies shutting down. As information moves to the web, some of the core principles they could rely on before, exclusivity and scarcity, are no longer available to them as anyone can easily blog about everything in this link economy. The arrival of the iPad made many magazines and newspapers jump on board, because with apps, there's an illusion that these core principles exist again.

Whereas it soon became clear that most people were not willing to pay to have access to a web site, they thought that it would be easier to get these same people to pay to download an app which has basically the same content, with some 'pretty' layer on top of it. With recent figures showing that sales of those types of apps have been declining recently however, Wilson argues that this is only temporary. Instead, he sees the mobile space heading more towards the web model, where information want to be free, and with billions of devices accessing mostly free content.

Traveling the world has always been a lifetime goal of mine. However, with so many remote places to visit, bringing a console along to play videogames is out of the question.  Thankfully, Electronic Arts (EA) has releases their second installment of Rock Band for both iPhone and iPad platforms called Rock Band Reloaded. Singing along to some of my favorite songs while climbing the top of a mountain anywhere in the world is now a very possible scenario!

Monkey Island Comes to the App Store

Posted by Brandon Gribin Categories: Games, New Apps, $7.99,

Monkey Island SEThe Secret of Monkey Island is now on the App Store! The classic point-and-click adventure game was originally released in 1990 on the Atari ST, Macintosh and PC systems. The Special Edition version released on the iPhone/iPod touch is also available on PC and .

The Special Edition features updated graphics, music, and voice recordings. You can switch between the new and old versions simply by swiping your fingers across the screen.

The game seems to be an excellent update although there have been mixed reactions to the controls. You move the cursor around by sliding your finger on the screen and using it like a track-pad. The game does not allow you to simply tap on a part of the screen to interact with it but hopefully LucasArts will adjust that in a future update.

All in all, Monkey Island coming to the iPhone is only a sign of more good things to come. From LucasArts, hopefully other classics will be revitalized soon - like Sam and Max and Day of the Tentacle.

This big App Store release clearly shows how much of a player the iPhone is becoming in the gaming world - even if not all hardcore gamers want to admit it.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Music, Videos,

The Mentalists, a girl group from the UK, created this video “Kids” by MGMT using only their iPhones and instrument simulation apps. The band’s singer, Kim-Leigh Pontin, plays an ocarina by Smule, Alice Offley plays a miniSynth from Yonac, Kelly Appleton uses Iconic Apps’ Retro Synth and Lyndsay Evans played the DigiDrummer Lite application from Magnus Larsson and Nick Rudolfsky. Kim-Leigh mentions that they weren’t paid by anyone to do this, but thought of it herself and calls herself a wannabe geek.
